Pet Sitter FAQ

Why do people use a pet sitter? Many pet owners (or parents) have learned that their “children” are happiest staying at home while they are away rather than traditional “boarding”. Cats and some dogs are happiest in their own familiar environment where they know the routine and have all their favourite places picked out. It is true that they will be spending more time alone than they are sometimes accustomed to, but when they miss you, they can curl up in your bed, your chair or other favourite place that has your scent to comfort them. Their routine, food and exercise stay the same. Your home is also being looked after and given a lived in look for your security as well as theirs. Most importantly, they receive one on one love and attention from their pet sitter.

I’ve never used this type of service before, and don’t know how my dog will do? It is true, not all dogs are suited to staying at home with a pet sitter. No one can judge that better than you, but there are some ‘tests’ to see how it will work. Does your dog spend time at home alone while you are at work? If so, they are used to the idea that you are indeed coming back for them. Your pet sitter will meet with you and your pet before starting any type of pet care. How does your dog react to the sitter? If they’re happy and comfortable, that is a good sign. If there are concerns your pet sitter has, they will mention it at this ‘interview’. If you are still not sure, it is wise to start with a short term absence (1 night instead of 1 week) to see exactly how your dog does before you plan that big vacation.

What do I need to do before I go away? Your J.B. Pet Sitter will meet with you before taking on any first assignment to get all the details they need to know. Please be ready to provide any relevant medical information, allergies, illnesses as well as any medications, their locations and dosages. Your pet sitter also needs any emergency contact information such as how to reach you, who your pets’ vet is, how to contact them and any other local contacts you may have. We need to know where all their food and supplies are, anywhere that is off limits to them and their favourite hiding places.

What if there is an emergency while I am away? The initial interview will help prepare your sitter for what you want done in any emergency. Your pet is our priority. If there is an emergency with them, we will try to contact you, but will not wait for confirmation if you cannot be reached. We will transport your pet to the veterinarian immediately for emergency care. Of course, we would prefer to go to your regular vet, but if their offices are closed and they do not have an emergency number, we will take your pet to the emergency clinic located at 400 Pembina Hwy.

If the situation is with your home, we will secure your home and ensure the safety of your pets. We will then contact you as well as any necessary local contacts you have provided us with (plumber, electrician etc). If you do not have a regular contractor, your sitter will contact a service of their choice.
